I like to use containers for edibles, not just ornamentals. Containers make is easy for me to get plants started in soil that meets their needs. It’s also a great way for me to incorporate fruit and veggies in areas where I don’t have the space for a raised bed or garden. That’s why I recommend container gardening for first-time growers and urban dwellers that may be short on outdoor space.
If you come to visit us at Moss Mountain Farm, you’ll notice that I have everything from kale to fruit trees planted in Crescent Garden containers. Near the entrance to the vegetable garden, I have two large fig trees planted in Estate Square planters. So don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t grow trees in planters!
I love the variety of color options and styles that Crescent offers, but what’s most important to me is that the planters are food safe. All Crescent containers are made from a food-grade poly resin, which means that you don’t have to worry about chemicals leaching into your soil.
You can see here that I’ve planted lettuce in this Caviar Black Ellis Planter. I like to keep containers of lettuces, herbs and other veggies near the kitchen for easy access.
I challenge you think outside the box about using containers in the garden. For instance, we planted some cucumber seeds in this Old Bronze Delano Planter. We then built a trellis around the container to support the cucumber vines as they grew. What’s great about this is every part of it can be moved if it needs to be.
I have found that cabbage also does well in containers. The variegated green leaves of the cabbage against this Caviar Black Madison Planter is just beautiful. I love using edibles as decorative elements, especially for outdoor entertaining. By having these cabbage plants in this sleek, lightweight container, I can move them around and use them to create an inviting space for al fresco dining.
With these containers, you’ll have something beautiful that matches your personal style and the peace of mind that your fruits and veggies will be safe to put on your plate!
